A Wolverhampton Three-Piece Pull Glam Swagger, Punk Speed and Sleaze Rock Into One Single

Hard Cold Lover is built for a sticky floor and a loud amp. Blanco Negra, a three-piece from Wolverhampton, released it on 5 December 2025 with an official video the same day. It runs just under four minutes, and it mixes alternative rock, glam rock and punk rock into one hard-driving single.

Blanco Negra’s Hard Cold Lover is in the playlist below, filed with this desk’s glam metal and sleaze rock picks, and the band’s coverage is collected on the Blanco Negra profile. The single came to RockRevival.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. How Hard Cold Lover Carries Sleaze Rock From Seventies Glam and Punk Into the Present Day

Blanco Negra describe themselves as a sleazy, red wine stained, punk rock ‘n’ roll three-piece. That tells you the lineage before a chord is struck. Sleaze rock grew out of 70s glam and punk, peaked in the late 80s and never really went away. Instead, it moved from the arenas to the back rooms of pubs and clubs.

The West Midlands knows that territory well. Heavy music has deep roots in the region, and its small venues still run on bands who play loud, play tight and play often. In fact, Blanco Negra have been gigging extensively as a three-piece since October 2023, according to Jace Media Music.

Where Blanco Negra Fit in the West Midlands Sleaze and Glam Punk Circuit Today

The band began as a duo, with Dave McCarthy on lead vocals and guitar and Gayna McCarthy on drums and vocals. Then Anne Blakemore joined on bass in 2023, and they became a three-piece. She plays on Hard Cold Lover, according to the single’s Bandcamp credits. Blakemore left in October 2025, and Matt Dooner now plays bass.

The live circuit shows where they fit. For example, they played the Worcester Music Festival in 2025. Before that, in December 2024, they were on the bill at the Wolverhampton Arts Centre launch of Black Country Rock Against Racism, a night that raised funds for local refugee and asylum seeker charities.

The catalogue has grown quickly, too. The Sunshine Girl EP came out in November 2023. Next, Hard Cold Lover arrived in December 2025 as the first single from a full album, and (You Set My) Heart on Fire followed in January 2026. The debut album, Smile! You’re Not Dead Yet, landed on 27 March 2026. It holds eleven original songs, including new recordings of the four EP tracks, and Hard Cold Lover sits second in the running order.

According to Jace Media Music, the album was produced by Dave Draper at The Old Cider Press Studio in Evesham. So the whole record stays inside the wider Midlands, from the band’s home city to the studio. That album title also says a lot about their attitude. It is gallows humour with a grin, the same spirit that ran through the best sleaze rock records.

The Wildhearts, Guns N’ Roses and AC/DC Sit Closest to Hard Cold Lover

The band’s own reference points make the comparisons easy. The Wildhearts proved in the 90s that a British band could mix punk speed, glam hooks and heavy riffs. Guns N’ Roses turned sleaze rock into a global sound with Appetite for Destruction in 1987. Meanwhile, AC/DC supply the other half of the equation: a riff, a backbeat and a shouted chorus are all a rock song needs.

Jace Media Music adds The Dogs D’Amour, Motörhead and the New York Dolls to the list of influences. Its review also points to a rock ‘n’ roll riff intro, Dave McCarthy’s raspy vocal and a middle-eight guitar solo. As for the lyric, the band dedicate the song to all the romantics who fall in love way too quickly.

Blanco Negra sit where those acts meet, on a smaller and rougher scale. That is a strength. After all, the stripped-back trio format keeps the songs direct, and the glam and punk influences stop the riffs from turning into pure heavy rock.

Who is this for? First, anyone who still owns a battered copy of a late-80s sleaze record. Second, fans of 90s British rock who miss the noise and the humour. Above all, anyone who likes their rock loud, fast and slightly unhinged.

RockRevival.News’s curator team: “Hard Cold Lover does what a sleaze rock single should do: it gets in, hits the riff hard and gets out before the beer goes flat. Three players, no padding, and a chorus built for a packed room in the Black Country.”
