Two Instruments, One Register
In heavy music the bass guitar is competing for a range the guitars have already occupied, and every mix has to resolve that conflict somehow.
A guitar tuned to standard pitch sits comfortably above the bass, and the traditional division of labour works without effort. Tune the guitars down far enough and their lowest notes approach or reach the bass’s range.
When two instruments with similar harmonic content occupy the same frequencies, the result is not twice the weight. It is a crowded, indistinct low end where neither instrument is clearly audible and the overall impression is muddy rather than heavy.
Why Simply Turning the Bass Up Fails
The instinctive response is to raise the bass level, and it makes the problem worse rather than better.
Adding more energy in a region that is already congested increases the total low-frequency content without improving separation. The mix gets louder and less defined, and on smaller speakers that cannot reproduce the range at all, the bass simply disappears while the mix loses clarity.
Masking is the underlying mechanism: a louder sound obscures a quieter one at similar frequencies, and both instruments are loud. Level adjustments cannot solve a problem caused by overlap.
Bass amplifier distortion behaves differently from guitar distortion and is worth treating separately. Because the fundamental is so low, distorting the whole signal muddies it, which is why parallel or band-split distortion became the standard approach rather than driving the full range.

Distorting the Bass Moves It Upward
The most widely used solution is to distort the bass, which works because distortion generates harmonics above the fundamental.
Those harmonics occupy the midrange, where the guitars are less dense, so the bass becomes audible through content that is not competing. The listener perceives the low fundamental partly through its harmonics, which is why a distorted bass can be clearly present even on speakers that reproduce nothing below a hundred hertz.
The common refinement is to split the signal, distorting only the upper portion while leaving the low end clean. That preserves the weight while adding the harmonic content needed for definition.
Carving Space With Filters
The complementary approach is to remove low content from the guitars, which most engineers do more aggressively than guitarists expect.
A rhythm guitar sound that is enormous in isolation usually contains a great deal of energy below where its useful content sits, and removing it costs almost nothing in perceived weight while freeing the region entirely for the bass.
Done carefully this produces a mix where the guitars sound thinner solo and the whole arrangement sounds heavier, which is counterintuitive enough that it is frequently resisted. The test is always the full mix, never the isolated track.
Note choice matters as much as processing. A bass playing root notes under a riff doubles the guitars’ fundamental; playing fifths or moving to inversions places the bass where the guitars are not, and that is an arrangement fix costing nothing.

Arrangement Solves What Processing Cannot
The most effective resolutions are made before mixing, by deciding that the two instruments should not play the same thing.
When the bass doubles the guitar riff exactly, the overlap is total and no amount of processing fully separates them. When the bass plays a related but distinct line, or holds while the guitars move, both remain audible because they are doing different things.
Playing higher on the neck achieves the same separation in register. A bass part sitting above the down-tuned guitars is clearly audible and still functions as a bass, and it is a common approach in bands whose guitars are tuned very low.
There Is No Universal Answer
What makes this a persistent problem rather than a solved one is that each resolution has a cost, and different records need different trade-offs.
Heavy distortion on the bass gives definition and reduces the sense of clean low weight. Filtering the guitars gives space and makes them less impressive alone. Arranging around the conflict constrains what the parts can be.
Every heavy record makes some combination of these choices, and identifying which combination was used is a reliable way to understand why two records with similar instrumentation sound so different from one another.
Checking the low end on multiple systems is not optional in this genre. A balance that works on full-range monitors can disappear entirely on a phone, and heavy music is consumed on phones as much as anything else is.
